The first view of our Sun from anywhere in the solar system

Viewing the Sun from all angles will be crucial as humanity extends its reach towards Mars and beyond.

3 satellites capture images of the Sun’s EUV emission in different spectral bands: SDO, STEREO A, and STEREO B. They are spaced apart to capture a 360° view of the Sun.

Combining the different satellite observations into a full “4D view” using AI is demonstrated here for the first time. We are now able to directly view the poles and observe solar eruptions from all angles.

Outcome

FDL used AI to amplify the extremely small numbers of photons entering PSRs and removing instrument noise to make these regions visible for exploration for the first time.
